It depicts the narrative of Amber, a young girl from illiterate Punjabi parents, who is trapped in a world of repression and domestic abuse but still dreams of being a successful athlete. The story’s intensity and realism are enhanced by the use of verse, which would not be apparent in prose. The careful selection of three or four words to replace one or two sentences of text gets right to the point. Every “chapter” is a new and original poem in its own right, with the author varying the poetic form and toying with the words on the page.
